Sri Lanka Embraces AI Education: Cabinet Greenlights Pilot Project
In a significant move toward technological advancement, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the initiation of a pilot project aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses into the school curriculum, starting from Grade 08. This milestone decision, announced by the Department of Government Information (DGI), follows a strategic recommendation made by a task force appointed for the formulation of a national AI strategy and plan.
The decision, made on 02 October 2023, underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing the education system by incorporating AI-related courses. Spearheaded by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, also serving as the Minister of Technology, in collaboration with the Minister of Education, the project enjoys the backing of Microsoft.
Aligned with the national AI strategy, the pilot project aims to introduce AI courses into mainstream education. The DGI highlights that the project will commence after revising the current international syllabus provided by Microsoft, incorporating recommendations from the National Institute of Education of Sri Lanka. Initial implementation will target Grade 08 in schools equipped with the necessary human resources.
Furthermore, selected schools participating in the pilot project will undergo digitalization leveraging Microsoft’s resources. Additionally, Microsoft will facilitate the training of 100 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) teachers, essential for the successful execution of the project across Sri Lanka.
This initiative marks a crucial step in preparing Sri Lankan students for the future, equipping them with essential skills in AI, and positioning the nation at the forefront of technological innovation in education.
