Revised Academic Allowance for University Academic Staff
The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka has announced revised rates for academic allowance for university academic staff, effective from January 1, 2024.
The revised rates are as follows:
- Lecturer (Probationary) – 144%
- Lecturer – 164%
- Senior Lecturer Gr. II – 189%
- Senior Lecturer Gr.1 – 189%
- Associate Professor – 196%
- Professor – 203%
- Senior Professor – 209%
The UGC has requested Higher Educational Institutions/Institutes to make payment of Academic Allowance at the revised rates with effect from January 1, 2024.
The provisions of Commission Circular No. 1000 with regard to the Academic Allowance, shall continue to apply subject to the above amendment.
This is a welcome development for university academic staff in Sri Lanka, who have been calling for a revision of academic allowance for several years. The increased allowance will help to improve their standard of living and make a career in academia more attractive.
It is important to note that the revised allowance rates are still subject to approval by the Ministry of Education. However, the UGC’s announcement is a positive sign for university academic staff in Sri Lanka.
