Quiz Competition on Non-Communicable Diseases
The Sri Lankan Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, has announced a nationwide quiz competition to raise awareness about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among school children. The competition targets students in Grades 8 and 9.
The initiative aims to educate young people about healthy lifestyles and the risk factors associated with NCDs, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases. These diseases are a growing concern in Sri Lanka, and health officials believe that educating children is crucial to promoting long-term health and well-being.
The competition will be held in six rounds: zonal, district, provincial, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. All government schools in Sri Lanka are eligible to participate. Each school can submit a team of five students from Grades 8 and 9.
The competition will cover a range of topics related to NCDs, including:
- Chronic NCDs: This category covers diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.
- Risk factors: This category will focus on unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, obesity, tobacco use, and alcohol use as risk factors for NCDs.
- Acute non-communicable diseases: This category covers accidental injuries and first aid.
- Other non-communicable diseases: This category covers mental illness, kidney diseases, and thalassemia.
The winning teams at each level will receive certificates and cash prizes. Schools that perform well will also be awarded prizes.
