NSBM Granted Approval for New Faculty of Medicine
Kandy, Sri Lanka – March 12, 2024: The National School of Business Management (NSBM) has secured a significant milestone with the Cabinet approving the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine. This new faculty will function under the joint supervision of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
The faculty aims to expand Sri Lanka’s medical education landscape by enrolling 500 students annually. This program will cater to both local and international students seeking a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree.
To facilitate practical training, Homagama Base Hospital has been designated as the primary location for these students. The Cabinet previously approved the hospital’s use by NSBM, solidifying its role as a crucial center for medical education.
Furthermore, a streamlined approach is being developed to optimize resource allocation at Homagama Base Hospital. This includes establishing dedicated spaces for clinical training and professorial units. NSBM has pledged to fund the necessary upgrades to ensure the hospital meets the standards set by the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
In a noteworthy move, the Cabinet has approved the transfer of Homagama Base Hospital to the Ministry of Health, paving the way for its transformation into a teaching hospital. This action underscores the government’s dedication to fostering excellence in medical education and equipping future healthcare professionals with advanced facilities and training.
