New GPA System Introduced in GCE O/L Exams
Sri Lanka’s education system is set for a significant shakeup with the announcement of a major reform to the Ordinary Level (O/L) examinations. Implemented from the 2026 exams onwards, the changes aim to provide students with greater flexibility and choice in their studies.
Reduced Pressure, Increased Options:
One of the key highlights is the reduction in the number of compulsory O/L subjects. This will lessen the academic burden on students and allow them to focus on areas that align with their interests and strengths.
Goodbye A,B,C Grades, Hello GPAs:
The traditional A, B, C grading system will be replaced by a Grade Point Average (GPA) system. This provides a more comprehensive picture of a student’s overall performance across all subjects.
Core Knowledge Remains Central:
Subjects like Science, Mathematics, Mother Tongue, English, Religion, and Information Technology will remain mandatory, ensuring students develop a strong foundation in essential areas.
Elective Subjects for Deeper Exploration:
Students will have the exciting opportunity to choose up to three additional subjects that pique their curiosity. These elective exams will be conducted by the schools themselves, offering a more tailored learning experience.
Focus on Progress, Not Failure:
The new system emphasizes student progress over failure. All students will receive a passing grade based on their calculated GPA, removing the pressure of failing the O/L exams entirely.
Looking Ahead: New Streams and Opportunities
The reform extends beyond the O/L level. Starting in 2027, a new “Education” stream will be introduced for Advanced Level (A/L) examinations, catering to students with lower GPAs. Additionally, vocational training programs will be expanded to offer valuable career paths for students with diverse interests and academic strengths.
